Steps that can be taken

If you are looking for support for someone else, it is important that they are aware of, and have freely chosen to engage with, our service.

We cannot approach, contact or discuss an individual’s circumstances with them without their prior consent and a willingness on their part to engage with us.

Wherever possible, we therefore ask that the person seeking support books their own appointment, so that they understand what the appointment is for and are comfortable with the decision to engage.
 

This principle also applies when seeking support for a child or for someone with additional support needs. Parents, carers, family members or other trusted people can help and support an individual to access our service, but we want to ensure that the person receiving support is aware of what is being offered and is willing to participate, in a way that is appropriate to their age, understanding and individual needs.

We do not want anyone to feel pressured into counselling, psychological support or peer-mentoring, so it is important that everyone involved is informed, consenting and comfortable with the decision before a consultation is booked.
 

Once they are ready to engage

Once the individual who needs support understands what is being offered and agrees that they would like to engage with our service, they will need to attend the consultation themselves. They do not have to do this without support: a parent, carer, family member, advocate or another trusted person can support them to access and attend their appointment, where appropriate. The important thing is that the individual remains at the centre of the decision to engage and is comfortable with the support being offered.
